The Starnater Reliant Woodsman's Knife

SRWK

Sold Out

Eddie has spent many years designing and perfecting the exact knife that he wants on his belt out in the woods. It has been a long road getting this knife just right, and he's very excited that it has come to fruition at last.

The S.R.W.K. comes in an ambidextrous leather sheath that can be worn in either a vertical or horizontal carry, and in keeping with our commitment and practice of bringing you high-quality AND affordability, is priced at under $200!

Heavy-duty enough to chop down a small tree or rough out a bow, yet with a delicate enough edge to carve a bowdrill notch or trap parts — and awful pretty to boot!

To all of you who have been waiting so patiently for so long, now is the time to act! We have placed our first order with the knife-maker and he has advised us that it should be ready to ship to us in around the beginning of April. Many of you have told us that you want to get in on this first bunch so don't delay!

The S.R.W.K. is Currently Sold Out
(If you wish to be contacted when the next batch is ready for pre-order send Julie an e-mail to let us know.)

All About the S.R.W.K.

The full-tang blade on the Starnater Reliant Woodsman's Knife is made from 1/4 inch CM154 stainless steel, providing a heavy-duty blade that can be used to chop, split, and carve. The polished hollow-ground edge sweeps out to an delicate point that is capable of fine detail work, such as carving trap parts and bowdrill notches.

As a special "bonus" feature, the tip of the S.R.W.K. has been designed at a 45 degree angle — the perfect size for a bowdrill or hand drill notch — so you will always have your notch template with you, no matter where you are.
The grind is designed in a way that when used for splitting, the knife edge is in contact with the wood for the minimum amount of time. Within about a half an inch the thicker part of the blade takes over the work, leaving the edge free and clear and without further risk.

The spine of the blade has a slight sweeping curve coming up to a ridge two inches behind the tip. This is so that when you are using a piece of wood to hit the back of the knife when choppingor splitting, it will have better purchase and be less likely to slip off, giving you more control and creating more efficiency with each blow.
The back of the blade is left square to facilitate scraping functions such as removing plant fibers or using a "metal match". This feature also porvides an ergonomic handhold so the knife can be used to remove wood as with a draw knife.

Knife Specs

Overall Length: 10 inches

Blade length: 5 inches

Steel: CM154 Stainless

Handle: Micarta

Sheath: Leather

Lanyard hole .25 inches from handle butt

Full Tang

3 Loveless-style screws

In order to reduce the weight and create a balance point that is further toward the blade, the tang tapers slightly, down to about 3/16", between the middle rivet and the butt end. This allows the balance point of the knife to be exactly over the index finger, giving the user the fullest amount of control over the blade.
The three stainless steel Loveless-style screws are absolutely flush with the grips. This style of screw gives the greatest assurance that no part will pop off or come loose at the wrong moment, and you won't have to worry about searching for knife parts on the forest floor around your camp.

SRWK Blade

The Blade

Eddie tried out prototypes made from several different steels, and after comparing edge retention, ease of sharpening, durability, ease of maintenance, and cost, chose to have the S.R.W.K. made from 154CM Stainless steel. For our purposes, this one outperformed the rest by far in bringing you the best performance for a reasonable cost!

A tough steel that can stand a lot of punishment, Eddie roughed out an entire greenwood bow with this knife, and it was still shaving sharp! After much further abuse (cutting tin cans) the edge finally had to be touched up, and it returned to it's sharpest quickly and easily.

SRWK Handle

The Handle

Made from micarta (a resin-infused fiber compound) there are no worries about the grips succumbing to the rigors of weather or rot. Since the S.R.W.K. is designed to be a knife that gets a lot of outdoor use, this was an important consideration.
The scales are smoth and comfortable in your hand, without the stress of expanding and contracting in heat and cold (as happens with wood handles) they will remain that way for years to come, without worry over splinters coming up or gaps developing that could cause blisters - both important to avoid whenever possible out in the woods.

With Carabeener

The Sheath

Each Starnater Reliant Woodsman's Knife comes with a heavy-duty leather sheath. Perfect for either left- or right-handed people, it is designed to be worn in a horizontal carry and will fit any standard-sized belt. However, for those of you who, like Eddie & Julie, rarely wear a belt, the attachment point at the top of the sheath will allow you to easily add a carabeener for vertical carry mode on a belt-loop or for carrying on the outside of your gear.
Also a great spot to attach a fire striker or ferrocerium fire starting rod (as shown). The attachement point is large enough to accomodate both a carabeener and a metal match, making it even more versatile! (Carabeener & striker not included.)
