Melon Baskets

Melon Baskets, Twined Baskets & Bags

The Melon Basket is one of the most versatile baskets patterns, and one of the fastest and easiest to make in a wilderness situation. Twined baskets comprise many of the most beautiful baskets seen in museum exhibits througout the world, and can be made from materials found in any ecosystem.
In this workshop you will make simple versions of both these baskets, and see examples of several different variations on the basic pattern that you can learn to incorporate into your own designs. By applying the techniques you'll learn you will be able to make a variety of different baskets, bags and other containers.

Coil Baskets and Twined Baskets

Coil Baskets

Often seen made from pine needles, Coil baskets can be made of many different things, and turn the most basic of natural materials into beautiful and functional pieces of artistic craftsmanship. You will learn several different stiches that will allow you to customize the design of your Coil basket, and discover how varying your materials can completely alter the look of your container.
Whether you are looking to make functional baskets or to find a new artistic outlet, learning the basics of this basket style will allow you create virtually any type of container you may need.

Natural Basketry

Birch, cedar, tulip poplar, ash, willow, wisteria, grapevine, honeysuckle, pine needles, grasses... the list of natural materials from which baskets can be made is endless, and the baskets themselves are beautiful! This workshop will teach you several different styles of baskets suitable for collecting, storing, and transporting all sorts of materials, and that can be created in a very short period of time from a variety of different materials collected off the landscape. Fill your home with beautiful handmade objects that you can point to and say "I made that!"

Pack & Gathering Baskets

 

The Adirondack Pack Basket

The Adirondack-style Pack Basket is an extremely functional and beautiful alternative to the modern backpack or satchel. These Pack Baskets are incredibly lightweight, comfortable and highly durable. The style has been around for centuries and antique examples can be found in museums throughout the United States.
The Pack Basket you create in this workshop will be woven in the traditional style from split rattan, and you will be able to add accent colors and patterns with naturally dyed black walnut, osage and cochineal-colored strips. The reinforced basket bottom will hold upwards of 50 lbs, and you will add thick durable straps that will allow you to wear your pack basket comfortbly and with with confidence.
As many past students of the workshop will tell you, the basket you take home will make you the envy of family, friends, and passers-by!

Easy to sling over your shoulder and comfortable to carry, this great woven basket is the perfect size for foraging berries, flowers or greens. It also doubles as a water-bottle holder that is perfect for hiking the woods or wandering through the shopping mall. You'll learn how to adjust the size and shape of your woven baskets to create exactly what you need, how to reinforce the basket bottom to increase its durability and how to add an adjustable strap. Beautiful, durable, and versatile, these specially woven baskets are a prefect hand-made gift for family or friend that will be used and treasured for years to come.

Bark Baskets

 

Bark Baskets & Containers

Bark is one of the earliest traditional basket materials, and in this workshop you'll see why! The bark of many different trees can be used to make beautiful and functional baskets in a fraction the time a woven or twined basket would take. You will learn several different techniques for making bark baskets, including single-piece baskets that don't require any stitching at all.
Whether you need a tall thin container for a quiver, a short stocky one for foraged greens, a broad flat basket for berries or even a seamless container for boiling water, bark can provide you with a container of the exact size and shape to fit your needs. You'll work on multiple different bark basket styles that you will take home with you!

Coal-burned bowls and spoons

Burned Bowls & Fire-fashioned Containers

One of the most ancient ways of creating containers, bowls, spoons, cook pots, mortars & pestles and many other useful items can all be created with nothing more than hot coals, tongs, and patience. While making your own coal-burned items you will learn the most efficient methods of using fire, the truth of "slower is faster", how to most accurately check your temperatures, and how to deal with cracks, checks and other coal-burning problems & predicaments. The methods you will learn during this one-day workshop can be scaled all the way up to burning out your own dug-out canoe (though we won't have time for that in just one day!)
An often overlooked survival skill, these beautiful hand-crafted items will give you a better understanding of, and new appreciation for the skills and ingenuity of our ancestors.
